A case study of the 2008 ICTP / Blantyre Polytechnic / Blantyre College of Medicine joint project to build a long distance WiFi network. The network connects Blantyre to Mangochi, spanning a distance of about 160 km.
A combined wireless security and network monitoring talk that covers 802.11 security features, encryption basics, and open source security and monitoring tools.
This is a basic introduction to using WiFi for wide area networks. Link types (point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, etc.) as well as radio operating modes (master, managed, ad-hoc) are covered.
By using external antennas and modifying the firmware, very low cost, long distance WiFi links can be built. High gain antennas require careful alignment, that most be done using signla generators and spectrum analyzers. A low cost version of these is presented.
